What is fat burning?

Fat burning is the process by which your body converts fat into energy. It happens all the time – both when you’re resting and when you’re active. Your body uses fat alongside carbohydrates as fuel, and the balance between the two depends on the intensity of your activity. At lower intensities, your body relies more on fat, while at higher intensities it draws more on carbohydrates.

However, how efficiently your body burns fat varies from person to person. This is influenced by both biological and lifestyle factors.

Age: When metabolism slows down

Many people notice that maintaining their weight becomes harder with age – and it’s not just a myth. From around your thirties, your basal metabolic rate gradually declines. This is largely because muscle mass tends to decrease while body fat increases.

Muscle tissue burns more energy than fat, even at rest, so when muscle mass drops, overall energy expenditure does too. Hormonal changes also play a part – for example, declining testosterone levels in men and lower oestrogen levels in women can affect how the body stores and uses fat.

  • Eat a balanced diet – include enough protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates.
  • Get enough sleep – aim for 7–9 hours per night to help regulate hormones and energy balance.
  • Manage stress – activities like walking, meditation or gentle exercise can help lower cortisol levels.
  • Be patient – fat burning is a long-term process, and small, consistent changes bring the best results.

Fat burning isn’t just about willpower – it’s a complex interaction between biology and lifestyle. By understanding how age, sex and genetics affect your body, you can set more realistic goals and work with your natural tendencies. It’s not about fighting your biology, but about finding the balance that works best for you.
